Plumbing is one of the foundations of any home and having the right pipes and fittings is crucial for keeping it running correctly and efficiently.
The Right Pipe for the Right Job
Having the right pipes and fittings for your specific needs is a big part of effective plumbing. Plumbing pipes are rated for different usages, so using an incorrect pipe can lead to a reduction in efficiency or even costly leaks and repairs. There are several types of pipes: water pipes, gas pipes, drainage pipes, waste pipes, beverage pipes and ones that are rated for high pressure or heat. Some options are PEX pipes and fittings, PVC pipes and fittings, ABS pipes and fittings and Brass pipes and fittings.
PEX Pipes & PVC Pipes
PEX pipe, or cross-linked polyethylene, is only used to supply water. It can easily be routed through ceilings, joists and other tight spots and can be cut easily, making it easy to use. PVC, or polyvinyl chloride, is customarily used for drains and vent lines. It can be glued with solvents and is much lighter than traditional steel pipe.
Copper Pipes & ABS Pipes
Copper pipe is used for supplying water to the home and handles heat and pressure well. It can also be recycled. ABS pipe, or acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, is another pipe used in vents and drain lines. It’s stronger than PVC, but doesn’t stand up to heat as well — and has a tendency to warp at high temperatures.
Pipe Sizes & Pipe Schedules
Pipes are available in various sizes and wall thickness. The term “pipe schedule” refers to the wall thickness of the pipes and determines the inside diameter of a pipe. While wall thickness may vary across various pipe sizes, the pipe schedule may be the same, meaning a 1-inch Schedule 40 pipe and a 2-inch Schedule 40 pipe will not have the same wall thickness. The pipe pressure needs for your project will determine your pipe schedule. If you are unsure which to choose, speak to a Home Depot Associate.
Pipe Fittings
Fittings are what connect your pipes to each other and to their required outlets. There is a fitting for every type of pipe, including elbows, crosses, couplings, unions and more. Elbow fittings give you a 90-degree angle turn, while crosses and tee fittings can allow you to split your pipes multiple ways for easy customization.
