Once you decide it’s time for a kitchen renovation, look for inspiration and ideas. Watch design shows on TV. Flip through magazines. Browse ideas on Instagram and Pinterest. When you come across a kitchen you love, think about which elements work for you (e.g. the layout and flooring) and which parts you would change (e.g. the height of the upper cabinets or the drawer organizers). Compile all of your ideas in a folder, either on your smartphone or printed out.
Make an appointment to meet with an in-store kitchen designer for an initial consultation. Take rough measurements of your space prior to the appointment, and bring these measurements and your inspiration with you to the consultation. Your kitchen designer will review your inspiration, show you all the great options available at The Home Depot and outline realistic timelines. You will work together to balance your “really-wants” and “must-haves” with the realities of your space. This is simply a consultation, not a design appointment. Once your kitchen designer has a clear idea of the scope of your project, they will give you a rough cost estimate so that you can make any necessary product adjustments to keep within your overall budget. They will also arrange for a professional installer to call you directly to schedule an in-home measure appointment.
The in-home measure appointment is a chance to get the key information and measurements for a successful installation. A local, licensed, background-checked and insured professional will accurately measure your kitchen and note locations of plumbing, electrical and any additional elements that would affect the design and/or installation. The measure fee will be deducted from the purchase cost of your eventual Home Depot kitchen installation.
The in-store design appointment is when the fun begins — you’ll get to choose everything you need to make your dream kitchen a reality. Your kitchen designer will work with you to pick out cabinets, configurations, countertops and accessories like hardware and drawer organizers.
This is your opportunity to review the final design and approve product selections before ordering. Your kitchen designer will walk you through a visualization of your new kitchen and order everything you need. You’ll receive a breakdown of exactly what your new kitchen will cost (including product and labour), and learn about financing options available through The Home Depot. Payment for the project will also be due at this appointment.
The Home Depot will coordinate your installation from start to finish (including a 1-year warranty on labour) using licensed and insured professionals. You’ll be contacted to select a convenient date and time for the install. It’s a good idea to set up a temporary kitchen until the project is finished. Once complete, the installers will clean up and conduct a final walkthrough.
When designing a new kitchen, it’s just as important to plan your budget as it is to plan the project itself. Typically, a kitchen remodel budget follows the 1/3 rule:
You can order everything you need through The Home Depot — your kitchen designer will help you. To help make your dream kitchen a reality, learn about financing options available through The Home Depot.
