Is Your Dryer Vent Hose Safe?

Does your gas or electric dryer tend to overheat? Are you noticing an increase in drying time required for even small loads of laundry? If your dryer is performing poorly, a new dryer vent hose could be the answer to improving efficiency.

A new dryer vent hose can be installed to optimize airflow and reduce drying times, but your dryer ventilation system could also need re-routing.

Installing a code compliant dryer vent system and transition hose is the best way to maintain your dryer’s efficiency.
Dryer Vent Safety Guidelines
The International Residential Code (IRC) recommends the following guidelines for Dryer Vent Installation compliance:

Elegant interior space featuring zebra blinds installed over large windows, allowing natural light to filter through.

Dryer Vent and Ductwork Requirements

  • Dryer vents should be installed independent of any other ventilation in your home such as HVAC system or chimney chute
  • All dryer ducts should be a minimum of 4 inches wide in diameter
  • Sagging or disconnected ductwork risks being damaged. All code-compliant ductwork for your dryer vent should be firmly supported and secured
Cozy living room with soft lighting featuring horizontal dark green blackout shades installed over a large window to provide privacy.

Outdoor Emission

  • All dryer ventilation should lead directly outside the home (particularly for gas dryers which can release carbon monoxide and other toxic gases)

A well-lit living room featuring horizontal faux wood blinds installed over two large windows.

Dryer Vent and Hose Length

  • Dryer vent hoses should be as short as possible, to a maximum length of 8 feet.
  • A complex dryer vent system can ultimately reduce your dryer’s efficiency. As per the IRC, any concealed dryer ductwork should be no longer than 35 feet

Elegant bathroom featuring French doors, a white bathtub and roman shades installed over a window adding to the stylish aesthetic.

Transition Hose Requirements

  • Using the wrong type of transition hose such as foil or vinyl could void your product warranty
  • A dryer vent transition hose connects from the dryer to the wall and should always be made of durable solid metal or semi-rigid material.

Dryer Vent Joints

  • Dryer vent joints allow you to direct airflow around corners. When properly installed these joints should be free of screws and facing in the same direction to optimize airflow.
  • All joints must be sealed with an approved metal foil (UL-listed) tape to maintain an airtight connection and prevent lint buildup.

How Do I Inspect and Maintain My Dryer Vent?

  Routine Lint Cleaning

  • A build up of lint in the lint trap or dryer vents can clog your dryer vent system and eventually ignite a fire.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing your lint trap regulary will significantly reduce the potential of a fire and improve dryer performance.

Avoid Vinyl or Foil Dryer Vent Hose

  • Most manufacturers include a warning label advising consumers not to use vinyl or foil dryer vent hoses.
  • If a dryer fire occurs, vinyl or foil can quickly spread flames to walls and ceilings. Using a white vinyl or foil dryer vent hose could nullify the terms of your warranty.

✔  Metal Piping

  • In the event of a dryer fire caused by lint or overheating, durable code-compliant materials for your dryer vent hose can help contain a potential fire
  • Solid metal piping or semi-rigid materials are far less combustible than either foil or vinyl

✔  Aluminum Tape

  • When attaching a new dryer vent hose, be sure to secure the connection to the wall and the dryer with aluminum tape.
  • Avoid using screws or duct tape to secure the dryer hose, which can increase the risk of a fire hazard
