DIY Console Table

Use three ready-to-assemble cabinets for this easy DIY console table. Place it behind the couch or customize further for a quick storage solution or place to hide chargers and wires in your living room. Watch our entire Cabinet Hacks series for more ideas.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Time:
  1. Instructions for assembling the cabinets are shown. Before You Begin

Before you begin, clear the area where your DIY console table will go. Remove any dirt or debris so you’re working on a clean, flat surface. Lay down a tarp or drop cloth to protect your floors from scratches or dust. Measure the space to confirm how many cabinets you will need and make sure they will fit comfortably. Finally, gather all your tools, hardware, and the cabinet instruction guides so everything is ready when you start assembling.

  2. A person assembles a cabinet. Assemble the Cabinets

Put together your three ready-to-assemble cabinets, or more if your space allows. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully, using a mallet and screwdriver to secure each piece. All the required hardware should be included with the cabinets, so keep it organized as you work to make assembly smoother.

Check out Eurostyle’s cabinet assembly video tutorial for more detailed instructions.

  3. A person uses a drill to attach their cabinets together. Join the Cabinets Together

Once all your cabinets are assembled, it’s time to join them together. Place them side by side in the order you want them in.

     To secure them:

    • Align the Fronts: Make sure the front edges of each cabinet are flush, so the finished table looks even. Use clamps if you have them to hold the cabinets in place.
    • Drill Pilot Holes: On the inside walls where two cabinets meet, mark two or three evenly spaced spots. Use a small drill bit to make pilot holes—this prevents the wood from splitting.
    • Screw Cabinets Together: Drive screws through the pilot holes from the inside panel of one cabinet into the side of the next. This will lock them together without visible screws on the outside.
    • Check for Level: After fastening, use a level to check that the cabinets are aligned. Adjust if needed before moving on.
  4. A person attaches legs to the console table. Attach the Cabinet Legs

Choose pre-made furniture legs or any another style with the look and the height you want. Carefully tip the cabinets onto their back or side, then mark where the legs will go: one in each corner and extra in the middle if the table is long. Drill small pilot holes, screw in the mounting plates, and then attach the legs.

Flip the table upright and check for stability, tightening any screws if needed.

  5. A person adds the doors to their cabinet. Attach the Doors and Handles

Follow the included instructions to attach the cabinet doors securely to the hinges. Take your time to make sure they open and close smoothly.

When adding handles or knobs, using a template (that is usually provided in the box) is a simple way to keep everything even and symmetrical—just line it up on each door, mark the holes, and drill before screwing in the hardware. This keeps the finished look clean and professional.

  6. A person installs a countertop on their DIY console table. Install a Countertop

Measure the full length and width of your joined cabinets, then cut a countertop to size (or have it cut for you at your local Home Depot store).

Place it on top so it’s centred and even, then secure it by driving screws up through the inside of the cabinet into the underside of the countertop. This creates a sturdy, finished surface for your DIY console table.

  7. Step 7 Complete the DIY Console Table

A finished DIY console table is shown in a living room.

That’s it! You’ve made your very own DIY console table. Move your finished table into place behind a couch, along a side wall, or anywhere it adds function and style to your space. Add décor pieces like lamps, baskets, or plants to make it your own.

For extra functionality, you can even customize it with hidden chargers and use cable clips or organizers to keep cords tucked neatly out of sight.
