DIY Makeup Vanity

Creating a personalized space to get ready for your day is simple with this clever cabinet hack.  To build a DIY vanity, use painted in-stock kitchen cabinets with drawers, sleek gold hardware and a countertop for a custom-made solution. By adding a chic beveled mirror, lamp and comfortable seating, you’ll have the perfect place to get ready in the morning. This project also doubles as a vanity desk for a customizable workspace that can be tailored to your space and beautifully complements your home’s décor.

Skill Level: Intermediate
Time:
  1. A bare wall is shown. Before You Begin

A successful project starts with good preparation. Begin by completely clearing the designated area for your new DIY makeup vanity. Ensure the space is clean and free of any dust or debris.

To prevent scratches or spills on your flooring, lay down a protective tarp or drop cloth.

Finally, gather all your tools, materials, and the manufacturer's instruction guide for the cabinets so everything is readily accessible.

  2. A person assembles a drawer. Assemble Two Eurostyle Cabinets

The foundation for this DIY makeup vanity is two kitchen base cabinets, which you’ll easily “hack” for a custom look.

Assemble two 24” x 34.5” x 24” Eurostyle base cabinets along with the three included drawers by following the instruction manual.

Check out Eurostyle’s assembly video tutorial for more detail on how to correctly put the cabinets together.

  3. Step 3: Sand the surface. Use a fine grit sandpaper (180-200) to smooth the surface for paint. Sand the Cabinet Surface

To achieve a professional, long-lasting paint finish, proper surface preparation is key. Lightly sand the exterior surfaces of the cabinets and drawer fronts using fine-grit sandpaper (180-220 grit is ideal). This process of sanding not only smooths the surface but also helps the paint adhere more effectively for a durable result.

  4. Step 4: Paint the cabinets and drawers. Use BEHR’s Alkyd Satin/Melamine finish enamel paint on your preferred colour. Paint the Cabinets and Drawers

Apply a high-quality paint such as Behr’s Alkyd Satin/Melamine Finish Enamel, which is specifically designed for cabinetry and provides a hard-wearing finish, in your preferred colour. We used black paint for a dramatic effect, but you can apply any shade you prefer.

Ensure you apply even coats to all visible cabinet surfaces and drawer fronts, paying special attention to the edges. Allow the paint to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions before moving on to the next step.

  5. Step 5: Attach feet, drawers and handles. Screw the feet on the corners of the bottom cabinet. Attach Feet and Drawer Handles

With the cabinets painted, you can now add the finishing touches. To ensure stability and even placement, measure and mark a position two inches in from the outside corners of each cabinet base.

Attach four small furniture legs to the bottom of the cabinet. For this project we chose matte black aluminum furniture feet.

For the drawer hardware, use a cabinet hardware template to accurately mark the pilot holes on each drawer front. This will guarantee your handles are perfectly aligned. Carefully use a drill to create the holes for your pull handles.

  6. Step 6: Install a countertop. Place the cabinets to the length of the countertop. Secure Countertop to DIY Makeup Vanity

Measure your space to determine the ideal countertop size for your DIY makeup vanity. For this project we used the Hampton Bay 74-inch Laminate Countertop with Pietra Spezia Black Marble Finish

Carefully place the countertop on top of the evenly spaced cabinets, leaving a sufficient gap for a chair or stool in between.

To permanently fix it in place, secure the countertop by drilling wood screws from the inside of the top cabinet.

Place a mirror above your DIY vanity for a stylish place to get ready in the morning or transform it into a DIY desk for a versatile workspace with plenty of storage.
